Case Based Reviews in Pediatric Endocrinology
By Vandana Jain, Ram K Menon
The book Case Based Reviews in Pediatric Endocrinology is organized into seven sections with a total of twenty-four chapters. The first section deals with disorders of growth and puberty that form the core of the practice of pediatric endocrinology. Included in this section are chapters that deal with disorders of sexual development and hyperandrogenism in girls. The second section contains chapters that discuss common problems related to the thyroid and adrenal glands. The third section addresses issues related to carbohydrate metabolism including hypoglycemia, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and monogenic diabetes. The related topics of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes mellitus are grouped together in the fourth section. Section five deals with disorders of water and electrolyte imbalance. Included in this section are disorders of calcium metabolism and the topic of rickets that is still a common condition in many parts of the developing world. The penultimate section contains a discussion into the pleiotropic endocrine manifestations of systemic diseases and therapies. This section also outlines the approach to child with inherited metabolic disease since these conditions can present to a pediatric endocrinologist with symptoms such as hypoglycemia or growth failure suggestive of a primary endocrine problem. The final section includes chapters on investigative techniques, both radiological and dynamic laboratory protocols, relevant to pediatric endocrinology. This book will prove to be a valuable resource in the practice of pediatric endocrinology and lead to early diagnosis and treatment of children affected by these disorders.
