SHORT AND LONG CASES IN ORTHOPEDICS MADE EASY FOR TRAINEES APPEARING IN FCPS/MS EXAM

BY DR. SALEEM QURESHI (MBBS, FCPS).

The idea of why to write a short and long case in orthopedics was easy in spite of having lots of books (clinical) available in markets. In fact, this book encompasses all those typical viva questions asked during short and long cases by the worthy examiners. So there is no need to get panicky before the examination regarding the viva questions; however, this book is not an alternative to our worthy teacher’s direct guidance.
After the theory examination, the next exam is the viva examination, comprising TOACS, short and long cases. It’s the game of nerves; it’s not passed by merely reading books in the library; it’s practice, practice,  and practice with the correct sequence and method according to the standard clinical books recommended by our teachers.
All candidates appearing in the viva examination have very good knowledge, even better than
examiners, e.g., remembering every classification, criteria, and treatment options, but bear in mind that a viva exam is not merely checking your knowledge, as knowledge is being tested in a theory examination. Now it’s time to assess your clinical insight, methods, and skills.
How precisely and comprehensively are you taking the history that differs from candidate A to Z?
How gently you examine the patient and interpret the clinical methods precisely and
comprehensively, which differs from candidate A to Z.
Avoid the thoughts of availing yourself of the approach of either A, D, or Z. Despite adopting others incorrect approaches, correct your own. Viva preparation is not done in isolation, especially in short and long cases. A group of three
candidates is appropriate.
One candidate should pretend to be an examiner, the second as a candidate, and the third as a patient. A sincere and honest friend will argue with you for correcting your method; don’t be depressed despite appreciating and working on yourself to correct and not repeat the same mistake. Time management is crucial if you are so correct but cannot manage time in an examination.
You are failing.
Why this book?
A viva examination is biased by multiple factors such as personal matters, mode of examiner, favoritism, number game, publicity of the institution, recommendations for passing, no third umpire, and no review system.
In my time, there was no such book or guide existing in our country for long and short case preparation, and every candidate perception was different. Thus, for sake of learning, I touched every corner of the country and learned from the most respected teachers, supervisors, and CPSP examiners, and I noted down each and every point listened to from them, thus finally formulated all the points in the form of a book (short and long cases in orthopedics made easy).
